Give Me Back My Mom! Gentaro Was Jealous of His Two-Week-Old Brother
Deep in the dense forests of Japan, a troop of snow monkeys lived among the rocky cliffs and steaming hot springs. They were a close-knit society, where dominance and affection intertwined, shaping the lives of each member. Among them was a young monkey named Gentaro, whose world had been turned upside down.
For the first year of his life, Gentaro had been the center of his mother’s universe. She groomed him, carried him on her back, and held him close at night to keep him warm. He had never known loneliness or competition—until his little brother was born.
Two weeks ago, everything changed.
A tiny, pink-faced newborn had arrived, and suddenly, his mother’s arms were no longer just for him. The baby clung to her belly at all times, feeding whenever he pleased, while Gentaro was left watching from a distance. His mother still cared for him, but it wasn’t the same. She no longer picked him up when he reached for her. She no longer groomed him for long periods like before. Instead, all her attention was on the fragile, helpless newcomer.
Gentaro felt something he had never felt before—jealousy.
The First Signs of Resentment
At first, Gentaro tried to ignore his new brother. He sulked in the corner of the troop, refusing to play with the other young monkeys. He hoped that if he waited long enough, things would go back to how they were before.
But they didn’t.
One morning, as Gentaro watched his mother cradling the newborn in her arms, something inside him snapped. He rushed forward, letting out a sharp screech, and tried to push the baby away. His mother reacted instantly, pulling the infant closer and gently but firmly pushing Gentaro aside.
Gentaro’s heart pounded. Why was she doing this? Didn’t she love him anymore?
His frustration grew as the days passed. He began acting out, throwing tantrums by rolling on the ground and screaming whenever his mother ignored him. He even tried to climb onto her back like he used to, only to be brushed off. The message was clear: he was no longer her priority.
The Breaking Point
One afternoon, as the troop gathered around a small hot spring, Gentaro sat nearby, watching his mother nurse the baby. His jealousy burned hotter than ever. He wanted her to hold him again. He wanted things to go back to before.
Fueled by his emotions, he made his move.
With a sudden burst of energy, he lunged at his brother, trying to pry him from their mother’s grasp. The tiny newborn let out a weak squeal, startled by the attack.
His mother reacted instantly. She bared her teeth and let out a warning screech, something she had never done to Gentaro before. Then, in a swift motion, she swatted him away.
Gentaro tumbled backward, stunned. He had expected her to scold him gently, maybe even comfort him—but instead, she had protected the newborn from him.
For the first time in his life, Gentaro felt truly alone.
Understanding and Acceptance
Over the next few days, Gentaro kept his distance. He no longer tried to fight for his mother’s attention. Instead, he watched from afar, confused and hurt. He didn’t understand why things had changed so much.
But as he observed his baby brother more closely, something inside him softened. He saw how small and fragile he was. He saw how he couldn’t climb yet, couldn’t even shiver properly in the cold without their mother’s warmth.
One day, as their mother nursed the infant, Gentaro approached cautiously. Instead of attacking, he reached out a tiny hand and gently touched his brother’s back. The newborn twitched, then made a soft cooing sound.
His mother looked at Gentaro, her expression calm. She didn’t push him away this time.
That night, for the first time since the baby had been born, Gentaro curled up beside his mother again. She didn’t hold him like before, but she didn’t reject him either. And as the baby snuggled against their mother’s belly, Gentaro reached out, resting his hand on his brother’s tiny arm.
Maybe he didn’t have to fight for his mother’s love. Maybe there was enough for both of them.
And with that thought, he finally drifted into sleep.
